Montgr, a Cultivar within the Montserrat tomato type
AB Montgri is a new tomato cultivar with Pera Girona morphology that was developed in Spain from CDP02518 and CDP05564. This cultivar is characterized by superior organoleptic quality and low level of susceptibility to blossom-end rot (BER). From May to October 2007, Montgri was evaluated against its parents, two widely grown accessions with Pera Girona morphology (CDP08823 and CDP09437), and the commercial hybrid most widely grown in the traditional area of cultivation of Pera Girona (Bodar and Royal Sluis S.L.). Montgri scored well for all agronomic or morphological traits, obtaining values similar or better than the best parent for each trait. The incidence of BER was significantly lower in Montgri (1.5%) than in other Pera Girona accessions but similar to that recorded for Bodar. Montgri registered higher values for sweetness, total soluble solids and taste intensity than the parents and other accessions of Pera Girona. Montgri was superior for its balanced sweetness/acidity, with medium acidity and low pH.
